Intro to Free Motion Quilting

Have you always wanted to quilt your quilts on your own, instead of sending them to a longarm quilter? Or have you done straight-line quilting, but would like to throw in a few curves?   

In this class, you'll learn four introductory free-motion quilting motifs: meander, loopy meander, swirls (AKA spirals), and switchbacks. With just these four motifs, you'll be able to custom quilt on your own and set the stage for more advanced motifs.   

We'll also discuss some FMQ myths (no you don't need to know how to draw), options for basting your quilt, and proper posture to help prevent injury (quilting is exercise!)   Each week you'll learn one or two motifs, and you'll leave class with a sample sandwich you quilted yourself, ready to head home and practice.

You will learn:

• Three different quilt basting options
• Four different motifs of hand-guided, free motion quilting: meander, loopy meander, swirls, and switchbacks.
• Lots of tips & techniques to aid in success with free motion quilting!

Materials needed:

• Class kit valued at over $70 is included
• List of  optional tools is provided in email when registered
• We provide the sewing machine, but feel free to bring your own!

*Students will work at their own pace and may have homework between classes. 

Classes will meet on the following Saturdays:

• February 10; 1:00-4:00pm
• February 17; 1:00-3:00pm
• March 2; 1:00-3:00pm
